Trees = Jobs?

The State of Florida currently finds itself in a situation unlike anything it has seen in 63 years: the population is declining.

Last year, almost 60,000 fewer people lived in Florida.  According to the Palm Beach Post, this is “…the first population decrease since military residents left the state after World War II.”

In a state that depends on tourism and the service industry almost as much as it depends on agriculture, a population decline is alarming:  fewer people moving to Florida means less demand for those services and fewer workers for the businesses that drive the local and statewide economies.

The economic downturn has at least one upside, however: it has put renewable energy on the forefront of policy, economic, and kitchen table discussions.  Florida’s $16.5 billion forestry industry–the state’s number one agricultural commodity—represents not only renewable energy, but green jobs for the people of Florida. Indeed, while most people think of sandy beaches and palm trees when they envision Florida, in reality, nearly half of the Sunshine State is covered in trees–over 14 million acres of timberland.  More info coming soon…

A Good Reminder to ME: Business-Related Blogs and What Not to Do

I was asked to write a “simple description” of social networking.  Does that even exist anymore?

For inspiration, I decided to browse through David Meerman Scott’s Web Ink Now blog, where I found this post: The Top 5 corporate blogging mistakes and how to avoid them.

This blog immediately reminded me that most of us don’t know what we’re getting ourselves into when we decide to take on the constantly-evolving world of social media.

It’s time-consuming and requires non-stop education to stay ahead of the curve.

Thanks to folks like David Meerman Scott who help us try to navigate our way through it.
